In this tutorial Good Looking Design is going to show you how to design an Aurora logo.

Aurora Logo Photoshop Tutorial

Aurora is a home information pack company. They specialize in fast & cost effective domestic/commercial & new build energy performance certificates and 2d/3d interactive floor plans, audio tours & professional photography. Aurora came to GLD in need of a re-brand. The idea was pretty simple and relevant, to turn the logo into a neat Aurora. Usually I create my logos in illustrator so that they are vector based, that way they can be blown up to any size. But as I had to use many effects to create this logo it had to be done in Photoshop.
Step 1 – Create A New Document
I started off by creating a new a4 document at 300dpi RGB. This way if ever the logo was needed for print it would still be good quality.

Step 2 – Create A Rectangle
Using the rectangle tool, create a rectangle.

Step 3 – Warp Flag
‘Command’ (ctrl or apple key) ‘click’ on the rectangle and select ‘warp’. In the top left of photoshop you should see some warp preset options. Select ‘flag’ and set it to 20.00% bend. IMPORTANT: next be sure to duplicate this layer (right click on the layer in the layers pallet and select ‘duplicate layer’, we will need it later on, you can hide the layer by clicking the ‘eye’ icon in the layers pallet.

Step 4 – Gradient
Next go to your layers pallet right click on the flag layer and select ‘blending options’ go down to ‘gradient overlay’ and click on the coloured bar. Set each colour stop at 25% intervals. If you want to use the same colours as I have then use these hex codes: fef8cc, ef9950, f34e52, c91452, 492449. Angle 90 degrees.

Step 5 – Flatten Layer
In the layers pallet, create a new layer above the flag then select both layers and press ‘command’ (ctrl or apple key) and ‘E’ this should turn the layers into one getting rid of the option to change the gradient overlay.

Step 6 – Texturizer
Go to ‘Filter’ – ‘Texture’ – ‘Texturizer’ then input these settings:

Step 7 – Motion Blur
Next go to ‘Filter’ – ‘Blur’ – ‘Motion Blur’ and input the following settings:

Step 8 – Hard Edge
Now we want to get rid of the soft edge at the bottom of the Aurora. Go to your layers pallet and command click on the small flag you duplicated earlier on. Make sure you still have your blurry Aurora layer selected and then go to your tools and click on the marquee tool. Now move the moving ants up past the blurry part of the base also making sure that the ants have gone past the blurry part at the top.

Next press ‘command’ ‘shift’ and ‘i’ this will invert the marching ants then hit the delete key. You should now have a hard edge at the base.

Step 9 – Transform
Now press ‘command’ ‘T’ and stretch the flag vertically so that it is tall again.

Step 10 – Shadow
Now to create the shadow to go behind the flag we need to again ‘command’ ‘click’ on the duplicated layer (making sure your main layer is still selected) and then using the marquee tool drag the marching ants down to the bottom quarter of the Aurora. Then ‘right click’ inside the marquee and select ‘layer via copy’

Now go to your layers pallet ‘right click’ on the new layer and go to colour overlay and select black.

Next go to ‘Filter’ – ‘Blur’ – ‘Gaussian Blur’ and input these settings:

In the layers pallet move this layer behind the aurora and then press ‘command’ ‘T’ ‘right click’ and select warp. Move the points in the bottom part of the warp so that they poke out of the sides.

Now delete any unwanted shadow areas using the ‘eraser tool’ and drop down the opacity a tad.
Step 11 – Soft Light
Go to your layers pallet, ‘right click’ on the aurora layer and select ‘blending options’ go to ‘gradient overlay’ and with the standard black and white gradient set the blend mode to ‘soft light’ and the direction to 90 degrees.

Step 12 – Text

Now we want to create the text for the logo, I used the font ‘Air Conditioner’ which you can get from: http://www.dafont.com/air-conditioner.font do all of the text in capitals then align centrally with the Aurora.

Step 13 – Glossy Text
Now we want to make the text look more dynamic, so lets give it a glossy effect. Go to the layer, select ‘blending options’ ‘gradient overlay’ and then do the following: Left hand colour stop:1d1d1b location 0%. Middle colour stop: 464646 location 50%. Middle colour stop 2: 706f6f location 50%. Right hand colour stop: b2b2b2 location 100%. Angle 90 degrees

Step 14 – Aurora Text
Now to create the colourful Aurora around the text, you need to duplicate the layer and then give it a gradient overlay the same as the Aurora shape: fef8cc, ef9950, f34e52, c91452, 492449. Angle 90 degrees. Next you will need to go to ‘Filter’ – ‘Liquify’ it will ask if you want to rasterize the text, click ‘ok’. Using the liquify brush, draw upward strokes at the top half of the text and then once finished press ok.

Step 14 – Aurora Text Blur
Layer the liquified text so that it is behind the black text. Now go to ‘Filter’ – ‘Blur’ – ‘Motion Blur’ and input similar settings to these:

Step 15 – Aurora Text Duplicate
Duplicate the blurred text twice more and set the top layers blend mode to ‘overlay’.

Conclusion
If this tutorial has made any sense you should have a logo similar to the one below. Hopefully you have found it useful and will be able to use some of these new techniques you have learned to produce some kool logos and effects for your own projects. Please post your tutorial results below.

Prefer to make this logo using Illustrator? Below is a video from Melissa Doyle Design demonstrating how to do just that.
